Nowadays everyone loves to text. But what is SMS and what is SMS text messaging all about? SMS is short for Short Messaging Service. Quite simply, it is the ability to send a brief message between two compatible devices - typically two mobile phones.
Since its commercial launch in 1995, texting has gone from strength to strength. With over 78% of the population owning mobile phones, a staggering 55 million texts are sent every day in the UK alone.
In 2001 over £200 million was generated in calls to text services. In 2002 it rose to £225 million and in 2004 went above £277 million. As the statistics indicate, this is a continually growing and very lucrative business.
